Building segments

The segments feature allows you to create specific segments of people based on filtered-down responses in your survey. This is a great place to start when analyzing your results as you can start to create groups or segments of people that stand out from the rest, getting you closer to finding true insights.

Start by using the filter feature.

The filter feature lets you filter survey results based on respondent answers. With this tool, you can easily break down your survey results and focus on the specific segment of your data.

Step breakdown

1. In the upper right, select the “Filters…” button. You will see the pop-up window which asks you to choose questions and answers that you want to filter by.

2. Add the filters you want to include in your segment.

For instance, if you want to know the opinions of Gen-z people who listen to Podcast you could add the question “What do you primarily use Auris for?” and choose the answer “Podcast” by selecting “=”. You could then add the question “How old are you?” and choose the “between” and type “13” and “24”.

If want to exclude the answer choice, you could select “<>”.

3. After you have selected the questions you want your segment filtered by, save that segment by naming it in the bottom text box and selecting “Save Segment”.

It will save the segment instantly. If you want to see that segment applied to the data, simply select “Ok” and the analysis page will reload with your selected filters.

Note on naming: Your segments will show in alphabetical order in the view cuts and compare views, keep that in mind if you are trying to organize your segments a certain way. You can also use numbers in your segment name to group segments.

4. After you’ve saved a few segments you can select the middle combine/compare dropdown button, toggle to “Compare” and then select the segments you want to compare

You can compare as many segments as you like, just be aware that as you start to compare over 5 segments the loading might slow slightly.

Go back to the main page by clicking the “Analysis Page” on the top right corner.

Why do we use segments?

Understand Your Audience

You can use filters to emphasize important information or filter out unnecessary information.

If you are conducting a customer satisfaction survey, you may find filters helpful to understand who is satisfied (or dissatisfied) with your products or services.

Using filters for brand awareness, your organization can more easily discover the demographic attributes or qualities of those who purchase your products or services. When you learn about your customers’ specific likes and dislikes, needs, and preferences, you are better able to adjust your strategies and get actionable insights.

Organize Your Results

Filters help you overcome feeling overwhelmed by having too much data. You can also get rid of unnecessary information or question by hitting the “Hide” button. Using filters makes your analysis of a specific piece of data more accessible and quicker.

Okay, now that we have cuts, you might wonder what should we do about it? Check out Combine and Compare for more info!

How to filter out responses so they don't show up on the analysis page:

If you want to add a filter that excludes data imported from SurveyMonkey or TypeForm out of the analysis page, go to the hamburger menu on the dashboard page and select “Exclusion Filters” from there use the filter dialog to remove data.

If you want to add a filter range to a numeric response question so that it excludes certain responses from the analysis page - go to Question Detail and open the toggle that says “Filter Range” next to the question you want to filter and turn on the response range filter.
